Boiler Upgrade Scheme
Boiler Upgrade Scheme Explained
The UK government’s Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) aims to address multiple challenges including fuel poverty, escalating energy expenses, and the urgent need to combat climate change.
Through this initiative, households can receive grants to assist with the transition from fossil fuel-based heating systems to more energy-efficient alternatives such as air source heat pumps or biomass boilers.
How much funding can I access via the ECO4 Scheme?
You can get one grant per property. Grants are available for:
- £7,500 towards an air source heat pump
- £7,500 towards a ground source heat pump (including water source heat pumps and those on shared ground loops)
- £5,000 towards a biomass boiler
The system you install must meet certain standards, such as minimum efficiency levels (RE4U can advise you on these).
Am I Eligible for Boiler Upgrade Scheme Grants?
Explore if you qualify for grants under the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS), available in England and Wales. Both homeowners and businesses have the opportunity to apply for these grants. Notably, unlike other UK government energy efficiency schemes like ECO4, applicants are not required to claim benefits or meet specific income criteria.
- Property Ownership: You must own the property for which you are applying, whether it’s your primary residence, a business premise, a second home, or a property leased to tenants.
- Installation Date: Your new heating system must have been installed or planned for installation on or after April 1, 2022.
- Fossil Fuel Replacement: The upgrade involves replacing fossil fuel heating systems, such as oil, gas, or electric.
- Previous Funding: Even if you’ve previously received funding to enhance your property’s energy efficiency, such as insulation, you are still eligible.
However, it’s crucial to ensure that your property is suitable for a heat pump or biomass boiler installation. Consider the benefits of these heating solutions to determine if they are suitable for your home or business.
Does My Property Qualify for Boiler Upgrade Scheme Grants?
Confirm if your property meets the requirements for grants provided by the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS). Grants are available in England and Wales, and applicants are not obligated to claim benefits or adhere to specific income rules, setting BUS apart from other government schemes.
- Energy Performance Certificate (EPC): Your property must possess a valid EPC with no outstanding recommendations for loft or cavity wall insulation.
If your property has recommendations for loft or cavity wall insulation, find out what steps to take. If uncertain about your property’s suitability for a low carbon heating system, reach out to our team of qualified assessors for guidance. We can advise you on alternative options if your property doesn’t meet the qualifications.
Properties you cannot get a grant for
You cannot get a grant for:
- Most new build properties
- Social housing
- A property that’s already been given government funding or support for a heat pump or biomass boiler
- If you own a new build property
- New build properties which the developer is still building are not eligible.
- If you move into a finished new build with a fossil fuel boiler, you may be able to get a grant for a heat pump under the scheme.
- If you own a self build property
Your self build property is eligible if:
- You or the original owner built it yourself or you paid a builder to build it
- It’s never been owned by a business or organisation
- You’ll need to show your installer proof that your property is a self build, for example, a copy of the title deeds.
Other
- You cannot get a grant for a hybrid heat pump system (for example a combination of gas boiler and air source heat pump).
- The system’s maximum capacity must be less than 45kWth – anything over is not eligible.
